2000 500 Sportsman
#1
I just became a new member to the Polaris Family! I bought a 2000 500 Sportsman with only 150 Miles on it, the owner did not have the owners manual with it and I have a few questions that maybe someone can help.
1. What should the front and rear tire Pressure be at? The owner said it should be at 4lb but they seam to look flat.
2. With only 150 Miles should the unit still be in the break in Period? any extra care to be taken?
3. The previous owner did not change the oil yet or any coolants, or any lubes. Any feed back on this? Can the oil and filter be changed with no problems or special tools?
4. dose anyone know where to get a free download on the Manuel?
Thank you in advanced for your help I feel like a kid a Christmas! I want to take the best care of it and I hope that you all can help.

5-6 pounds in tires,IF IN DOUBT change oil and filter and there after every 50 hrs. Drain oil tank and 14 mm plug on side of engine(sump plug) engine sump holds approx 8 ounces oil,if dont drain this will mix with new oil. POLARIS PS4 PLUS is the recomended oil (2 quarts with sump drained also) fill 1 3/4 quarts into oil tank, crank, let ldle for about 4 minutes, check dipstick screw in and top off to full mark. In reguards to oil CAN use Mobil 1 0-40 oil,BUT no viscosity such as 10-30,10-40 and such.

I recommend STABIL brand fuel stabilizer year round if necessary AND you wont have carb issues. Can preserve gas up to a year or more. Plus in my own machines I "double dose" that is if says 1 ounce for 2 and a half gallons,I use 2 ounces! Once a carb is stopped up you have to remove and clean,WHY do have to go to the trouble when you can prevent it? BUT I keep telling this to my customers also!!!! Seems like nobody listens any way! ITS A GREAT FEELING to have a machine crank up after sitting for about 3- 4 months and RUNS GOOD!

Do you have a 2000 or 2005 SP500? Topic differs from your new username. LOL!
Tire pressures should be on fender decals. (unless the prev owner removed them.)
I owned the same ATV(2000)......It's one good solid ATV!
Only one small thing I can find fault with is the plastic steering bushing Polaris used that year seemed to wear-out quickly. Mine did, but I was running VERY aggressive mud tires that year.(26" Outlaws-non-radials)

Great advice! I also add the Stabil to my fuel. In addition, I add an ounce of Lucas Fuel System treatment to boot.

Polaris Tech,
Can you give a detailed description of doing the sump drain process and purging. I'm not sure of which hose to crimp to purge the air (the one with the "slits')? The manual doesn't show it well, and my dealer said it's not necessary to do it, as I change my oil & filer "very" frequently. Still, I would like to know how to do it, and be able to check that screen once in a while.
Also, the my dealer said that one can themselves into a little trouble if the purging is not done properly.
Thanks

Sump drain plug on right side of motor just behind prop shaft joint going to front gearcase,KINDA hard to get to,NOT necessary to "prime" engine as some oil still remains. I only block off tank vent line at top of tank with vicegrips(about an inch out, slit in hose about 2 inches out) to "prime oil pump" when rebuilding engines. This allows oil to circulate quicker without air slowing this process down) AS far as screen just check about once a year. THAT IS if you are changing oil on a regular basis!

Thanks Tech,
Mine has 25 hours on it, and I have changed it twice... one after the first month (5 hours), and then after about 18 hours. Mine won't see 25 hours between changes. I consider it cheap insurance.

Tire presure is written on the tire itself. When you change to a totaly different tire down the road how can you go by the ATV sticker?
A expensive 6ply radial is not going to have the same pressure recommendation as a cheap 2 ply tire.
