Default 500 ho hot when not???

My hot light comes on within 30 seconds of starting the engine. If I unplug the temp sending unit on the top of the head nothing different happens. The fan does not come on. The hot signal flashes with wire plugged up or unplugged. Full of coolant and seems like thermostat is working properly since the water seems to flow thru the radiator. The engine will overheat and steam and coolant will blow from the overfolw if I try to ride it. I think this is due to the fan not comming on. I have not had the recall on the emc done. Could that be the cause with these symptoms?

Check all wiring to the fan.A broken power or ground wire will turn on the hot light.

Uplug the fan wires in front of radiator and hook 12 volts to it, that will tell you if the fan works or not, red is pos and brown is neg.

if its a newer bike just unhooking the sensor i beleave will kick on the fan to see if it works. either way theres no way that the bike would over heat in that short of time from being cold. you sure the water pump is working, proper antifreeze. no air in the system?

was on the way to the dealer yesterday and by the time I finally got a call back it was too late to make the nearly and hour trip. So I set it up for today. Lady assured me they had the emc and could do the swap in a half hour. 5o I load the quad. I take a ride down to my working partners and he tells me we are not working in the town where the dealer is till Friday. Bummer, I come home and unload. I guess some of that bad luck has run low cause I get a call this morning and it is the "lady" at the dealer. Mr. T_____, I am so sorry, but I went back and checked and we don't have your emc in stock. So, had I not had the change in work plans I would have been already at the dealership when she called.
And now, it is on order so who knows. I guess I will hot wire the fan and take my chances for the rest of whitetail season.

My 97 500 was doing the exact same thing seemed like the coolant was flowing when the cap was off but when I took it in they found that the t stat was stuck and the fan switch was bad. I knew the switch was bad and never had a temp problem till the t stat stuck.

well, I finally got the ecm changed and the hot light still comes on within 5 seconds of starting it. I have a switch wired to the fan and just turn it on when I start and it does not run hot, it just thinks it is. I disconnected the sensor at the motor and the fan still did not run on its own, and hot light still flashes. oh well!?

Thats odd, when I start my ATV from cold the fan will not come on for nealy 20 min if it just sit there idling.

My fan quit once and it turned out to be a dirty connection between the fan and rad sensor, but it still would take almost half a hour for the over heat light to come on, not 30 seconds.

I still have this problem. I just run the fan all the time, unless I forget, and it never acctually runs hot, but the hot signal still flashes. It is a pain because you can not see the tack or milage or any thing else except the hot flashing. It has to be electrical since it is not really overheating.
