I don't know if it is rust, or if the muddy water when I ran through mud holes just baked itself on to the pipes. A pressure washer took some of the brown looking stuff off, but only where I could really get to it.

Summary: Mostly all models do it. Eventhough it has a worn/rusted appearance the outter layer does not rust through and protects the underneath. You can ceramice coat them, treat them with High temp paint or do some other things as some have done with varied results. As for me I am leaving mine alone!

Regards,

R'

My '03 muffler still is nice and black (1,350 mi.) When I wash it I always suds up the muffler too. Other atvs even newer than mine with less miles I've seen are rusted. I think it's the type of mud you run in or maybe exhaust temps.?? BTW, Does anyone bother to open the exhaust clean-out plug on the muffler?? I attempted it once but it was so tight I did'nt want to force it and break it or worse.

its just a water drain plug anyways and i wouldnt worry about taking it out as the heat alomost seems to weld it in after some use.

The plug is a clean out for debris in the muffler. It will come out by working it in and out using Kroil and lots of elbow grease. Once I had mine out, The threads were coated with anti-seize...........

I have a 99' 500 that the muffler is still black as can be and a 04' 700 that is rusted all over. I can seet the pipes becoming dirty and somewhat rusty but don't think it is right for the muffler to rust. I looks bad I need to do something for it.

You could be onto something about exhaust temps.

The plugs take some muscle to get off. I have taken them off but not much debrit came out. I have read that you need to plug the exhaust when doing it to clear all carbon build up in the muffler.
