Default Fan through the radiator?

A few weeks ago i purchased a 98 sportsman 500. Today was my first adventure far from home. I was a godd 8-9 miles from home on the trails when i hear the fan make a rattling noise. Before i could stop and get off to have a look see, i hear klink or metal on metal. Then the puddle of antifreeze dripping out. The fan is completly off the shaft, and the radiator is torn up pretty good. Getting it home was slow, I had to keep stopping everytime the HOT light came on and let it sit for 3-5 min. I havent started to take it apart and really assess the damage, but from what i can see it doesnt look good.

Is this a common issue for these machines or am i one of the lucky ones?

Never heard of that happening before either. Did the clip come off or just fracture.

So heres the damage

Not really sure why or how the fan came off, but it doesnt slide right back on. Any advise on how to get the fan to actually stay on? Also where can i find another radiator? New or used doesnt really matter at the moment. Also for when i get a new radiator, is there special coolant i need to use?

try taking the radiator to a shop. i would be that the leaks could be soldered up. use 60/40 coolant when you refill it. have no idea on the fan issue altho from the pictures it looks like the hole is the fan was originally just big enough for the stud to go through then the nut comes up and holds the fan inplace. thats just what i can tell from the pictures

I also see 3 cracks where the fan slips on the the shaft. That might be how it came off Might need a new fan to. I agree with eggenz7 bout takin it to a radiator shop. You can look up your model quad here and check on the $$ amount. http://shop.thumpertalk.com/oem.asp
