I was just wondering i have a 850 with 19 hrs and i find the fan runs quite a bit more than i think would be normal.......

1- are you other guys find it runs a lot

2-do you think it's because the engine is turned it has a little less air movement???

3- or is it just me??

It runs quite a bit a low speeds,more than my 800 did but still not abnormally IMO..it seems it comes on more often but doesn't run as long..
I think it is possible they have it set up with a tighter tolerance..in other words it kicks on at a lower temp that the older ones did...this is only my guess. I think they may have done this because the rad doesn't get as good natural airflow as the old mounting location did IMO..and a lower kick on temp wil help prevent the overheating..easier to keep it cool than to cool it down once it is hotter..make sense..lol Probably the reason that it did so well in the overheat test..if you believe that video..
Do check your coolant level though..it is possible for the machine to have an air pocket when the fill them at the factory...
But I wouldn't sweat it unless it is actually overheating...overall mine seems to run cooler than the 800 did..and the fact that the fan kicks on more often and runs for a shorter period is actually better..

I got a 2 year ESP for free..there were a couple of free 2 yr ESP offers going..1 for Camping World members and 1 for previous Sportsman owners..alot of guy took advantage of those. 1 guy I know of bought another 3yrs on top of the 2 free yrs..

 

Running a 800 and 850 side by side in the same conditions, the fan on the 850 does come on more often. I do feel though that the 850 runs cooler. I hope so. It should be fine running rich like they do. Am I correct in saying they heat up more running lean??

I had a 1996 Sportsman 400 awhile back, and the fan did not come on often enough and actually rusted up and quit working. I feel better having the fan on more often. I just wish it was like the kawi's and continue to run after the engine is shut down.

Yes running lean will make it run hotter..higher cylinder temps greatly affect coolant temps..
Roofer..just let it idle a little while before you shut it down,if the fan is running when you park it let it idle until it kicks off,then maybe anohter 30 seconds or so..
A fan that runs after the engine is shut down does little to no good unless you have an electric water pump that is also running to circulate the coolant..otherswise it is only cooling the coolant in the radiator and little to no fan airflow actually makes it to the surface of the engine on the Xp...the fuel tank is in the way..

 

The fan on my 850 comes on quite often. As long as it doesn't overheat, I'm good with its current operation.

 

I don't have anything to compare fan run time to but it does not seem to run all that much. I bought the 2 year extended plan. I sure would have liked getting in on one of those free deals as the 2 years was not cheap.
