2-50 oil what the h**l Polaris...
Up here in the North we rarely see temps greater than 102, happens 1 or twice a year at most. If it gets over 90 I start to melt so according to the chart 40 would be good for me. Why doesn't polaris label the weight on the container? Is it so they can dream up a new number so they have a monopoly for that weight of oil? My owners manual on the new 550XP says 2w 50 as well. I asked for it at the dealer and was looked at like I told him his grandma died. He told me that PS 4 is 0w 40. The owners manual does call to use PS 4. I figure that it is sythetic and the price is only 1 or 2 dollars higher than other sythetics so for to 2 or 4 bucks I guess I can go to the dealer. The filter is $13.99 that's !@#$ing highway robbery. Has anyone used anything other than OEM that works on the 550XP? What's the part #?

The filter msrp's for $9 and some change..but itseems that some dealers are charging over MSRP for the filters and oil change kits...I've heard of dealers charging 39.99 for the $27.99MSRP oil change kit!
Are you in Canada?
The filter in the XP oil change kit..fits both the 550 and the 850..
Here is what I have came up with for an aftermarket filter...
On the left is a WIX 51358 on the right a Polaris XP replacement out of the oil change kit
According to the WIX reference this is the same filter for the Polaris 500,Brute Force 750..and many many other machines...they do not list the XP yet though.
I found the Part number based on measurements. There is a slight possiblity the XP filter has a different bypass spec pressure, but I highly doubt it. This filter is a powersports applicaton and has a presice 8psi bypass(instead of a range or pressures for bypass) Also it is a 14 micron filter vice a more comon 19micron.
I can only guess that the Polaris part numbers for the XP are different because they went to a different, higher quality manufacturer..WIX..
With that said the Wix filters can be bought as Carquest Premium and NAPA Gold filters..but they still aren't real cheap.
I was only concerned with finding a alternative so I wouldn't have to drive and hour to the dealer or order off the internet.

HIGHOCTANE, I am from SD. I know from reading other posts and watching you exhaust vid that you have an 850 XP. Very sweeeet and awesome sounding by the way. The 850 and 550 are different filters aren't they? Did your OE filter say Suburu on it? If they are the same then the NAPA would be #1358 right? Thanks alot!

As far as I can tell the reason for the different part numbers between the original 550 filter and the 850 filter is the 550 filter that comes on the machine is supplied by Fuji, they make the 550 engine. The Polaris replacement filter that comes in the oil change kit is the same for the 550 and 850. That filters Polaris part number is different that the 500's as well...again different filter manufacturers. The filter that comes in the XP(550 and 850) oil change kit is identical to the WIX 51358..lot numbers are even the same format! Same amount of digits ending with a "E1".
Yes the NAPA Gold number is 1358..I need to do some more research on the NAPA filters but their site is down for me. They list 3 or 4 filters as interchanges for WIX 51358 all say they are made by wix and that the wix part is 51358 but all have vastly different prices. Looks like they may all be the same filter with different packaging and possibly different warranties.
You can get the NAPA Gold filter from Fleet Filters for $6 and some change....

Thanks for the info I'm going to try it next change see what happens. I know wix makes napas filters so I'll check there. I'm sure the dealer that got 13.99 for the filter and 9.99 for the oil enjoyed a 12 of his favorite alcoholic beverage on me. The last time I will do business there. I was in apinch and needed it for the first change. The same dealer though does have the cheapest cutting edges for my cycle country plow.
