New Isuues with the XP
#1
So i was planning a Father/Son day on the trails but our quads didn't start......the Kodiak needed lock deicer and Voila but the Xp not so much not even a click(just so ya know its minus 13 Celsius) so i call the dealer and i say i want the computer update and he rolls me in (great DEALER) and the mechanic say that he has found a problem with the XP (he was actually surprised cuz he says it a amazing machine which makes me feel better sorta)
SO the problem is .....
Because they did such a fantastic job sealing the starter/solenoid the condensation bulids in it and freezes and stops it from completing circuit ......he said for now just use a hair dryer on it for 3 mins and it starts for now.....he has talked to Polaris the fix is in the works so watch for this one...
i think if they just ran a breather from the starter up to the pod it would be okay but hell what do i know???

My machine took over 20 minutes to start, but it was -21 F which is totally understandable. So far so good. I had the backfiring issue too, and once I adjusted the throttle cable, the problem was eliminated.
The ONLY complaint that I have with this machine is that the fuel tank is NOT big enough. I'm only able to get 60 miles tops out a full tank of gas. I wish the aftermarket came out with at least an 8 gallon tank, then it would be perfect...I LOVE my new ATV

DavidXP,
Glad they got it fixed for you, and it's good for other XP owners in cold climates to know.
As for the throttle cable issues that a lot of folks have with relativity new Sportsmans in general... it is simply poor quality control on Polaris's part, or **** poor dealer prep... no excuse for it! When I get my next quad, the first thing I'm going to do BEFORE I take delivery is have the dealer SHOW me that they have checked and adjusted the throttle cable. That will be one less PITA that I have to deal with.

Also i got the re flash and the way the mechanic explained it it was just a plug fowling issue and really had more to do with guys who did short bursts like moving the quad around the garage /driveway more than riding it...it was just running rich the computer "warmed up the bike too often" fouling the plugs...so for the guys who warmed thier machine the went riding it would really be a non issue from how i understand it?!!so to answer rancher 55's question no smoother no more power SORRY to say

Scares me with a lot of the ECM problems you see. They've been around long enough to be bullet proof. No need for this. Its like wireless routers for your computers. Software works great but the hardware seems like junk.

i dont think its a ecm problem, more of an owner problem, starting the wheeler up and shutting it off without warming it up</end quote></div>
Amen! Thank you! Exaclty...IMO the hotter plugs ect is Polaris' way of making up for the lack of knowledge of the owners of machines. Need to make them dummy proof.
Also there is some evidence to suggest that they changed the programming on some later run machines and that the re-flash might be to change it back to the way it was.
Think of it this way..the machine runs rich when cold..it's called cold fuel enrichment..the EFI version of a choke..lets say they leaned that out to make up for the plug fouling problem(ie operator error)..now you likely have hard starting in very cold climates..hmm haven't we heard of a few having that problem while most do not?
Do you start you carb bike in extreme cold and just drive away? EFI makes cold weather starting easier but it does not change the physics of fuel and the comustion process..although the higher fuel pressures and better atomization do help..

Correct, the reason they are rich at start up is in case some dummy just drives off without letting it warm up, now they just start it and shut it off continuously!! i find i hard that some people would do this, i wish polaris would just send them some proper warm up papers to these people. make it nice bold letters so they can read it!!
