High rev it order to move it(2003 SP500 H.O. 785miles)Is this Normal?)
#1
I will be picking this machine up this evening. buying it from this guy that hot rodded this beast ( the front axles are not installed ,busted joints)
Anyway, I was wondering if it was normal for an auto tranny to not engage until a higher rev?
I do know that it takes higher rpms to move itbut, how much is too much?
Any help will be appreciated.

Possible belt damage OR clutch problem. Pull cover and check belt for a lot of slack or damage. Just might be all you need?

Thanks for responding old polaris tech,
I hope that if it is one of the two, that it is just the belt like you say.
I will take it apart tomorrow and check back with the condition of the belt.

Thanks for the response ftwflh,
The guy that sold it to me said that it just sounds that way because of the after market exhaust pipe being so loud when you give it some throttle. I think he is right.
Since it is my first automatic ,I didn't know what to compare it to.
There are tons of deferred maintenance need to be done on this machine, just started to go thru it .
Maybe you guys can help with some questions:
(unless I need to put these questions on another topic ..I'm a newbie to forums
educate me)
I'll ask anyway.
.*under what seems to be the water pump housing there is a small "drain" hole
that has a small drip. Does this mean the pump needs to be replaced?
*Is there an alternative cross reference parts list for this machine that I can get at my local auto parts store?
thanks in advance

yes the pump just needs to be rebuilt. there should be 2 seals and a gasket in there. not big deal once you get to it. its the getting to it thats a PITA

Thanks eggenz7,
I was searching the forum for this leak problem, turns out that some sportsman models will have a couple of drips out the weep hole when the atv sits for too long
& apparently stops after it has been driven.
In my case I think it to be premature to know for sure since all I have done since I bought it was start it so I could unload it off the truck .I will be monitoring it tho.
It does have a starter problem. The previous owner said sometimes you have to tap on the starter body to get it to turn.
I had to do so and when it did turn it sounded like a high speed rock tumbler.
any ideas?

try taking the starter off and take it apart to clean it up. probably has little chunks of rust in there. i havent torn into a 4 stroke starter but the 2 stroke starters that polaris uses along with the placement of them require a lot a maintenance

Thanks eggenz7,
I'll do that, In fact I am going to take her apart and just go thru everything (except for the motor) .
I am replacing must everything that is worn & some that typically wears (bearings, u-joints,etc..)
Oh yea, I was told by a motorcycle mechanic that specializes in Polaris that the water pump drip is unfortunately too common and that sometimes they drip and times they don't. He and his buddies that have the Sportsman model have driven
a grease type fitting into the weep hole and attached a clear hose all the way up to
the pod. He said that he has seen coolant slowly partially fill the tube then sucked back into the motor with time. With this he concluded that with out this tube, one could potentially suck dirt into the water pump when in deep water after one of these cycles , wearing the water pump bearing prematurely.
Just thought this info might be helpful.

My Scrambler did the same thing with the coolant drip. If it sat for a while and I got it out it would leak just a little bit. After running for a couple minutes the drip would cease and would not have any problems after that unless I let it sit for a month or so.
Heres a thread I started a while back that never took hold but it does have the HL link in it. Feel free to add any numbers you come up with that would be beneficial to others in the future.
