2002 Sportsman 700 blowing oil filter seal??
#1
Turn the engine over for 10 to 20 seconds & you can see the seal of the oil filter pop out & then oil starts pouring out(4 filters so far). I checked hose to top pan & that was perfect. Took off top pan & all rocker arm are moving their full range, so not camshaft. So I'm thinking rings might cause this. Anything else that might cause this & anything I can try. Im still just learning, so you're help is much appreciated.

I had the same issue after rebuilding my 700, but it only happened with wix filters for some reason. It had me worried, but i went and bought a new polaris filter and made sure i got it on tight, and haven't had an issue since. That was about 600 miles and a couple oil changes ago. Everything appears normal now....

Try another brand of filter and yes get them pretty tight, Wix # is 51357 thats all Ive used on my 700 and never had any problem, is it using oil or blowing oil into air box?

Its blowing the oil out of the dislodged seal in the filters. You can see the seal squeeze up through(between oil filter & wall that the oil filter tightens into) then the oil starts pouring out in that spot where seal is sticking out.

Yes make sure it's on tight, i think that was the problem with the wix. Well it wasn't really a problem with the filters, but operator error. When i switched back to the polaris i just made sure it was good and tight.

Will tighten one on tomorrow to try that out. Thanx
What about the relief valve? How do you check it to see if its plugged or whatever? and could it be this??

Did you check the fitting for the hose at the top of the valve cover. Also should be a slit on the top side of the hose.</end quote></div>
That was the first thing I checked & was good

Make absolutely sure there isn't any debris where the seal on the filter seats, it has to be perfectly clean. Then use clean oil to pre-lube the new oil filter seal. tighten hand tight + 1/2 turn. that should be tight enough.
