Default Hey 700 guys!

I finally got to load up my new (to me, actually it's an 04) 700 EFI and go to a trail ride. The day was great and all went well, but where did all my gas go so quickly. At around 45 miles my gauge was below half, and just out of curiosity, I filled it up and checked my milage when I got home, it averaged right at 17mpg. Is this about right? How may miles are you guys getting on a tank? Also, please forgive me for rambeling, When it gets hot the engine sounds very "ticky" at idle. Normal?
Thanks guys,
Jeff

17 mpg is about right, they are a little hard on gas, the oil may need changed, I do mine every 7 to 750 miles, I use Castrol Syntec 5w 30, others use mobile one, I have 4600 miles on mine with zero engine problems

Mileage is going to vary greatly depending on how you're riding, but 17 for trail riding sound about normal. As far as the ticking goes, mine is also a little bit noisy, i've heard others say it's just the nature of the engine. Since rebuilding it my "ticking" has been the same for about 600 miles, no metal in the filter, so i'm not worrying about it. I've been using 0w40 mobil one, though i may go to a 5w40 the next time around.

Jeff, I would check the valves, if you haven't already done so, this may cause the ticking also

no point in checking valves, hydraulic lifters take up the slack automatically, i'd just change the oil

Default Hey 700 guys!

Thanks guys, for the replies. I'm not real thrilled that I can only go 60 some miles on a tank, but I guess I can mount an auxillary gas can that will extend my range. As for the oil change, I only have about 100 miles on it since I bought it. The dealer "supposedly" changed all the fluids when I bought it, but who knows for sure. I'll give it a try. I notice none of you reccommended Polaris oil, do you feel the other oils mentioned are better?
Thanks again guys -
Jeff

17 sounds pretty good. Have to remember that you are not driving a constant speed on blacktop with 32psi in your tires. You are constantly speeding up slowing down for corners, stops etc. Also you are riding on about 5 psi with alot of tire flex. Think its bad now wait until you hit mud.
