so i know there are already several discussions on here already about this whole problem, but i may have a different problem. i'll explain.

had the same problem, engine idles fine, runs in reverse, yada yada yada. my problem is that my motor does not start running like a wagonload of crushed buttholes until it gets good and warmed up. the thing will run liked a raped ape until i get about a half mile down the road. i've tried all the secrets (intake, cleaned carb multiple times, checked fuel delivery, air filter, all other gaskets on intake side) i have a bad exhaust manifold gasket and was thinking it might be a backpressure issue, my father in law seems to think that it is fuel delivery issue, though when i took the carb out to clean it, i forgot to shut the fuel off and even with the fuel pump not running, it just dumped fuel out. i'm hesitant to go out and purchase a new coil since #1 everybody else seems to have the problem immediately, #2 they are EXPENSIVE!!!! so if there is another explanation, or if that is my only option, i'll do it! thanks in advance, ladies and gents!!!

first off we need to know what motor and year model you have.

have you looked at the diaphram in the carb closely? a small pin hole will cause problems.
have you done a plug chop to see if maybe the motor is running too rich or lean?
how are the floats in the carb? are they set right? is the choke circuit sticking somewhere causing too much fuel to be dumped into cylinder.

2002 sportsman 700.. sorry, forgot to mention that.

nice tan color when i chopped the plugs. checked the diaphragm with a little bit o soapy water and it didn't seem to have any leaks, and the float was in the right spot when you set it on a flat surface ala service manual. so yeah...

i would try to take a look at the fuel pump just to make sure. they can be weak and not be able to keep up the fuel supply

alrighty, so we put an auxiliary electric fuel pump on it this morning to give it a shot and it did the exact same thing. the output was about 25psi. i'm not sure what the output is on the stock fuel pump, but i imagine it wouldn't be much over that. so yeah, there's that. thanks for the help so far, much appreciated.

I would look at ignition breakdown..generally speaking as electrical components heat up the resistance increases making ignition breakdown more likely when the machine is warmed up.
Could be the coil, plug wires ect. Have you checked the spark strength when it is warmed up and acting up?

thats kinda what i figured, I just wanted to see if there could be any other explanation besides the expensive one, maybe something i overlooked in my frenzy to catch the ghost. what kind of suggestions would you guys would recommend as far as coil replacements that are not only inexpensive but built like a brick sh!thouse to keep this from occuring any time in the near future.

Are the plug wires original? I'd test those first that or just replace them..try the cheapest things first..besides if they are original they need to be changed anyway IMO. I'd throw new wires and plugs at it...
BTW what are your symptoms exactly? Is it missing, backfiring ect?

Did you check the gas cap to see if its letting air in?
I had one go bad on a lawn mower.
3 carbs kits and 1 coil......later found out lousy fuel cap.
I was pissed.... it was simple and I had missed it.
First place I look at now is fuel cap.

I'd check the stator. A friend of my had a problem like that. We'd hit the trail and about 10 min later it would just die. let it cool down about 2 beers worths and it would run fine for another 5 to 10 min and would die again. We were pretty loaded by the time we got back to camp. I know its not cheap to replace about $380 for the stator and then labor on top of that. I think you can check it with a Ohm meter and tell if its bad.
