Default 1998 scrambler smokes

hey i have a 1998 scrambler 4x4, sometimes when i start it it smokes and lets clouds of smoke when reved up, after driveing it for awhile it does'nt do it anymore, it's not a constant thing sometimes it starts and no smoke, but i did notice the ofter day when i checked my oil it was half gone, any ideas what might be causeing this? i don't think bad rings cuz that would make it constantly smoke right? maybe valve seals?, if valve seals are gone is that something the average joe can tackle? thanks in advance for any input

valve seals will only smoke after sitting for a while. so more than likely that is ur problem. you could have problems else wear too. maybe oil is blowing up into the airbox and the engine is sucking it in? just a thought.

to change the seals you need to be able to take the head off the machine. use a valve spring compressor and remove the springs. then you can pop the old seal off and put the new one back on. wouldnt be a bad idea to lightly lap the valves while you so far in it too. but just lightly.

No valve seals on that unit, that is a "mean 2 stroke machine" there buddy. I had three of the '99 Poo Scrambler 400 4x4's, sure wish they continued on making those monsters!! Anyways, 2 things to do on your Scrambler, first remove the cylinder, and have it inspected to see if the Nickasyl is within tolerance, or just a cross hatch needed. Second, you will need to inspect the pump itself, located in front of the motor, a small little box, can't miss it. My guess is if you are using excess oil, the pump spring is shot, and holding the oil line back. Very simple replacement, but make sure you bleed the pump on install
