Default Second Battery

Has anyone put a second battery in there machine for extra winching power and more power for lights? I have an 07 Sportsman 500 and was wondering how to go about it.

Thanks

Never had the need for one but you could go 2 routes. First can just parallel one in with the other. You will have more capacity but will load your charging system more. Second could go with a battery isolator like they use in camper setups.

I havent installed one,but we sell isolator kits that you hook up a second battery. The function on this set up is the second battery receives voltage from the main battery WHEN main battery is fully charged and stores and returns voltage when needed. We've sold a couple to a few guys that love to install a lot of lights. Hooking another battery to main battery is not the best idea,CAN cause problems as some of our customers have found out! Hard for the reg/rectifier to work directly with two batteries in line.. Had one customer in a Ranger decided to cross hookup(pos to neg from one battery to another),then hooking up positive and negative to system, ended up with 24 volts and a LOT of problems after the smoke cleared! Get and isolator kit to keep elec system from having problems.. Good luck OPT

id like to add a second battery for winter use. id like to mount my battery under the seat above the rear tranny. an isoltor! i like that idea. price? then i just need to make a mount for the battery.

my battery gets low only during winter it seems when plowing snow. (useing the winch, handwarmers, headlights, anf my warnings leds) with polaris made a bigger stator for it.

I would definitely like to do this mod...the most challenging part would be finding a GOOD location for a second battery.

Keep in mind (battery etiquette if you will)...that batteries should always be replaced at the same time and must be the same type battery. So...if you go with a sealed battery, then you should replace the OEM battery as well. Just something to keep in mind...

Good luck...

They should be the same size (capacity) as well.

as otp says, use it w/ the isolato the rectifiers arent that strong on atvs where they can do all the extra work load for a long time. imo
