Let it cool down then ride until the light comes on and repeat, the fans is off 60% of the time so it will go a good long ways before over heating, or get towed. I do not know to many people who ride alone especially mudding. It would have to be one long walk home to risk a motor job to avoid the walk.

Well when my wife and I got the Sp 450's back in 2006 On our third or forth ride my wife's HOT light flashed lucky she did notice due to the new Quad and all. We needed to stop ever 3-4 miles to let it cool. This was not due to mudding just one thick soupy hole and once the first 3-4 quads went through it she was last in the group,So all the thick stuff was disturbed in the mud hole and the back of her RAD was plugged.
Mattawa Fall ride Two young Guys with the new 800 Bombi's playing off trail needed to stop the rest of the day to let them cool down keep passing them on the side of the trail resting the brand new Quads.......So if your mudding this "does" happen and all I am saying .....this don't help the engine any and can lead to early failure down the road ....Correct?...........I was worried about my wife's just after 4-5 rides.........Having the HOT flashing........Caper.....

When you clean your ATV up, if using a pressure washer, always blow from backside out, you will be amazed on the amount of debris that comes out of the radiator. As for oil changes, I am a stickler at 500-750 miles on my 800 X2, and the tranny gets new fluid every 1000 miles, just a cheap maintenance item on these expensive machines

idk... i think i have 250 on my last oil change... and im sure the guy thats rebuilding it will... and if its black after i put only 100 miles on it.. with the mudding that i do i will change it again...i would rather spend 20.00 on a couple quarts of a oil and a filter than another 400.00 - 1500. on a rebuild
