Cam swap on a 97 500 sportsman
#3
The detent spring and entire detent lever can slide out if you turn cam up on its side, confusing a lot of people on how it goes back! With cam level look at spring and how it winds against lever and cam stop pin. Should be able to to push detent lever up and should spring back.In the middle of the cam you can see the ball bearing it pushes up and down.

The cam I have came out of a running parts bike and looks like the detent lever and everything is still intact on the cam,do I need to do anything other than install it? LOL Im stumped when it comes to this point in the process..

Just pull cam cover plate on left side of engine, after you have at TDC and removed cam sprocket. just slide old one out and new one in,replace sprocket and cam cover plate and detent wont go anywhere. GOT AHEAD of myself!! After you have at TDC,remove tensioner and replace after everything else is buttoned up. Tensioner must be set all the way back and will readjust after you pull the recoil slowly.
