Riding in High and Low

Ok so I was told when driving 5-11klm to be in low and anything above that jump into high. Seems like a real pain when Im in the trails I go from a spot that I have to run slow and then I can run fast....I have to stop and throw it into high??? Anyone shed some light on this for me?

If the area is rough (hard going on the machine) I would put it in low gear. Yes, anything below 7MPH you should be in low to keep the belt cool and the rpms up on the engine to keep the belt from slipping. If you drive in high gear that slow you will go through belts more often. If it is just a short spot that isnt hard going that you could keep it in High gear. In short spots I have actually used the brake to keep the rpms up so I could stay in high gear and go slow, again this was not rough terrain.

Depending on the quad, you should keep it in Lo if you are going to be crawling along for awhile under 10mph. If you are doing mostly above 10 and only have to slow down for a short time it is okay to leave it in High. It's all about the life of the belt. If you stay in High and are doing slow technical riding you'll burn up the belt much more quickly.

I use low when pulling or carrying a heavy load on a slower trail , riding on very slow trails or in slow low traction trail sections. On typical trail riding I just leave it in high even when the trail slows to a crawl for short peroids.
Even if I,m carrying or pulling a heavy load,I still use high range as long as my speed is up there.

Not sure what machine you have, but with my XP 850...I am in low whenever I ride under 20mph for long stretches. If over 20mph, then I am in High. All mud and rock trails get the same treatment...Low.

So I guess after changing it last week there is no "easy" way to do it.... I mean if I was out on the trail and the belt went on me Id be on the ground taking all the plastic off and so on eh?

Dont have to take off plastic, take 4 bolts out of footwell, bolts out of clutch cover, pull out bottom of footwell enough to get cover off, there is enough give in plastic, oh yeah you do have to remove the side cover.
