'08 Sportsman 500 EFI weirdness
So this weekend I took out the ATV's for the first time in 11 months.
I rode my wife's ATV for about 20 minutes stopping to talk and get the info on what was ahead since I was on this trail for the first time. We were going to be going down some pretty good grades, so I put it in 4x4 adc and off I went.
When I stopped at the bottom to put it back in 4x4, the engine stopped.
I got it started again but in order to keep it running I had to keep on the gas, and put it into gear.
Loading it on the trailer was interesting to say the least.
When I got it home, it was still doing the same thing.
I have a friend coming over tonight to take a look before I go the expense of taking it to the dealer..it has 11 hours on it.
There was about 1/2 a tank of gas from last lear and I filled it up with gas before the trip, so I am going to drain all of it tonight and put new gas in to see if that makes a difference.
Also, we will be checking the spart plug...anything else to check on?
TIA

the problem is the etc switch, not really an issue. it means there is to much slack in the throttle cable, this is a built in safety feature, to prevent a crash in case of a stuck throttle.
follow cable out of the throttle block, about 3 inches from the top end of the cable you will see a rubber sleeve over the throttle cable, pull back the rubber and there will be an adjustment to be made here. loosen the jam nut and turn the longer portion of adjuster counterclockwise until there is about 1\8 inch of freeplay in the throttle lever, then retighten jam nut slide cover back over the cable and now try machine, should work now.
too much slack in the cable cuts the ignition.

Thanks guys, that was it!
If I had half a brain up on the trail, I would have seen the "throttle cable freeplay" adjustment on page 128 of my owners manual as I was looking up troubleshooting that begins on page 129 :S.
Oh well, I know now and will probably be able to help someone else one day, thanks again!
