cv/axle boots
#1
I recently had a cv joint go out on my 02 700 sportsman, and will be putting in new one. My question is for maintanence is there an easy way to change the boots without taking the axle out and apart?
By the way, the cv is out but the axle is fine, I am looking at complete axle and cv with new boots and everything as I have no press to put cv joint together. Which way do most of you go when replacing the cv, whole part or just the cv? Newbie question and I did read the post at the top on cv removal.
Thanks.

just the cv joint unless you have money to burn. yes you have to take the cv out if its the inside boot(towards the rear end) and you can do the outboard(wheel side) w/ the cv shaft on the bike, but i find it easier to take it off. read the sticky thread above for good info on how to do it.

How can you do the wheel side with the shaft on the bike?
That cv yoke don't have a snap ring in there(wheel side) so I needed to take it apart at the inner remove the inner boot and then slide the whell side boot down the axle ...........then install the good boot back on again........Caper........

If you look at your thread on the c.v removal under above Sticky threads.
Scrol down to the recessed snap ring and when I did mine I only seen one on the transmission end , I could not find one on the wheel c.v side to take apart there.
Is this recessed snap ring on both end of the axle?
Maybe i just didn't wipe away enough grease to find the snap ring.
Only found the snap ring on one end of the axle......Thanks.....Caper.
If there are two of these per axle(recessed snap rings) it will sure help me next time.....

maybe were not talking about the same thing? you should be able to take both cv joint ends off the shaft. meaning the the big joint towards the housing and the smaller end w/ the slipne that goes thru the hub. at least i'm pretty sure i took them both off at one time lol.

Does anybody know for sure?
I only seen one towards the tranny end (this was rear left sitting on the quad)
But like I said I may not have cleaned it up enough to see the snap ring.
.......Thanks....Caper....
