Check engine light?
#1
Last week while we on our big trip to Hatfield McCoy for a week my check engine light came on. I noticed when we rode into Mann, it was off. Back on the trails for a ride to Gilbert it came on again. In Gilbert, it went off. Back on the trail to return to Browning Fork Trailhouse where we stayed, back on. After thinking about what was in common with riding the streets vs the trails I realized in town I had the AWD off, so I tried it. Sure enough, in gear AWD on check engine light on. In gear AWD off no light. Neutral or park, no light either way. Dummy me, I left my owners mannual at home, and didn't know how to check for codes. We rode Sun-Fri, but by wednsday, it did not come on anymore. The book says it comes on whit a problem in the EFI, I don't know why the AWD would bring it on.

It could be a ground short, is it stumbling at all? Check the battery terminals to make sure they are tight. It's could also mean it's time for service. The light comes on for awhile when you first start it to remind you it's time for service, I think it's set for 50 hours. The manual tells you how to shut it off, but mines not handy. If it's running fine, just ride till you get home.

I had the exact same problem with my 2008 SP800 when I went to Harlan KY for the Rincon Ride this summer. When I started to climb the steep mountain trails I put it in atv. When I reached the top the check engine light was on. I found that it would come on a few minutes after engaging awd. As soon as I turned the awd off the check engine light would also turn off. I never found the issue with it. When I retruned home it never happened again around the house. I never found a bad code on the system. Could it possibly have to do with the altitude change? Just a thought.

as i understand this awd on the newer bikes you can leave them in awd all the time and it only kicks in when it sensors wheel spin of 1/5 of a turn, so it wouldnt matter where you were riding. maybe a sensor?? as it's hard to tell. was the awd workng correctly?

in the dianostic mode you can scan through to the awd on section and it says on/off(i think anyways) and was wondering if you checked it if it would show the check light? could be a faulty circuit or something?

Mine to. AWD worked when needed, and Active Decent Control ( 4 wheel engine breaking ) worked as well.
