I was just looking at the new issue of dirt wheels and they did a project sportsman. They put a gps on it , a Garmin Nuvi 500 looks like a cool setup. I wonder how it holds up to hard trail riding???

I bought one about a month ago using up the last of my Cabelas points. It's a very nice unit. It does regular car style GPS and also does a 3D looking map with topographic lines. You can use it in North is up, or forward is up. Very nice off road. It gives you a good idea of the hills in your area and also provides a trail for you to follow back. It's nice as it has a regular touch screen interface that's pretty easy to navigate. It's built to be pretty shockproof and never had a hiccup when I ran it for a 20 mile or so trip. It's also waterproof down to a couple meters if I remember right. Another reason I bought it is that you can get memory cards with lakes and rivers for your area of the US for fishing that give you outlines and depths of the lakes and rivers. Go to https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=13424 for all the info.

I have the Lowrance H2Oc color unit with the 12 volt cord incl.
Also bought the Topo S/D card and the handlebar R.A.M. mount.
Color unit is the way to go now ......And this Lowrance has the larger screen than the others.......Caper.........

looks like a good set, I have the garmin 76csx and its been a good all around set. GPS CITY
has the Garmin 500 for 267. delivered. The only thing I would wonder about is that it is a touch screen and might get scratched up easily on the trails

I've been looking into the Garmin Zumo lately. I have a Garmin Legend Cx with a color screen, but it would be nicer to have a larger screen. The Zumo is made for cycle and looks like it can easily be used with gloves on. Worth looking at.

I have a Garmim Colorado with ram mount and it works well, I had a 60csx before that.

A buddy of mine just got the 500 but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I did do some research a couple of months ago and RAM makes a weatherproof enclosure for the Garmin Nuvis which can work with the touchscreen.

I do think the bigger the screen the better. If I thought it'd survive I'd use a tablet PC.

I have the Garmin eTrex Legend, although it's nothing special, it shows you distance, direction, allows you to save tracks, and allows you to plot points along the trail, which IMO is good enough for what I need, plus I got mine at Bass Pro for only $100 on sale, and combined with a 12 volt plug ($3 on ebay) and a RAM mount ($40 on amazon), I got everything that suits me under $150

I did have a Garmin Map 76s. It had tons of features but was not so user friendly. For my usage the Garmin Nuvi 500 is superb. I have a really good sense of direction and like having the topography to confirm/correct my suspicions about where I am.
