Default 1987 Trailboss 250

Recently picked up one for $100..was told that it will start sometimes but when it does it is difficult to keep at idle and when you can keep it there and put into gear it will bog down and stall..I have done some quick research here and it seems like I should be checking compression first...that being said my question is this,, how big of a fuel filter should be in the line from the tank to carb..seems like the one there is pretty large and I see no fuel in the line from the filter to the carb..any ideas..thanks in advance..

Check compression first, should be minimum 100 psi, check for good fire, then remove fuel line from carb and check that fuel is flowing. Should be able to determine which way to go after this. OPT
