Hub Oil and Brakes

Hub Oil and Brakes
I've heard that you should check the hub fluid to make sure you actually have 4wheel drive when you need/want it. How do I go about doing this? What fluid should I use and how do I fill it?
Also, I'm getting ready to change the brake pads in my 98 Sportsman and am looking for any tips or directions that may be helpful. Doing both front and rear.
Thanks in advance.

If your going to check the hub fluid you might as well change it. You should find a allen type screw in the side of the hub, remove it ,turn the hub downward to drain fluid, after fluid os drained rotate the hub back to the upright position and fill with (polaris demand drive fluid) a little at a time. with the fill hole at 8 o-clock or 4 o-clock position the fluid should just start to come out. That is your fill level. I've heard of some guys using tranny fluid for their hubs but I would strongly suggest the Polaris brand fluid (demand drive)IMO.

My early build 02 700 simply has hub bearings as far as I can tell. I just replaced a front axle two weeks ago. When it came apart it looked like the axle just went through a sealed roller bearing at the hub end and then splined into the rotor assembly.
Just my $.02
