I am 100% sure on the 850XP being NAPA 1357 since it's the one I use. The 550XP using NAPA 1358 is only what I've seen in several places in this forum.
Thanks for understanding, I am going to have to go change mine as I some how got it wrong and put a 1358 on mine. I looked up the filter on the Napa site and there is some difference in gasket size, micro #, check valve, and length. Also a big difference in price, about $4.50 vs $12.50.

Thanks Bill

The 550 and 850 use the same filter, the only reason the Polaris part numbers are different on the fiche is because the 550 number is for the filter supplied with the engine by Fuji. When you buy a Polaris oil change kit it is one kit that covers both the 550 and the 850.
The right filter is WIX 51358...the 1357 is NOT the right filter for the 850.
While the 1357(Polaris 600 and 700 filter IIRC) will screw on and seal it is technically not the right filter,it is too long(look at the height specs below) Do to it's "height" tt protudes too far into the access opening and is almost even with the skid plate, not a good idea. Same for the 51356(Polaris 800 Filter) Another possibility is the filter might hit the opening in the frame when the engine torques,I never ran mine with the longer filter on it so I don't know for sure...something to look at if you are running a 1357 or 1356 on the 850.

This is the stock 850 filter next to the WIX 51358. Way back, last year I took the stock filter and using it's measurements I crossed it to the 51358,went out and bought a 51358 and compared them. I thought I had posted the info on here but may I only posted it on HL?
Anyway the WIX filter fans will be happy to know that the stock 850 filter is almost certainly made by WIX....they are basically identical.

Thanks for the info and the pics. I will have to check when I get home and see what filter I used. I am pretty sure it was a 1357 but I don't recall it being too long, so I could be wrong. So confusing. I wish I had a dealership that was closer and actually STOCKED parts so I could just go with the Polaris brand stuff.

OK, so maybe I'm not losing my mind after all. I will have to have a drink to celebrate.

I am still wondering why the big price difference between the 1357 / 1358 NAPA filters, also they don't list the 1358 as having an anti drain back valve???? If that is true , it can't be good.

Maybe "too" long was a bad description, the 1357 is longer than the stock filter. As you know the way the 850 is designed there is a hole in the frame for oil filter access, with the 1357 installed the filter is just that much more prone to being damaged from being hit by something. I put a 1356(same height as the 1357) on mine just to see and I could have ran it but I just wasnt comfortable with how low it came, looked like it was asking to get punctured.

Unless something has changed the Napa Gold Filters are made by WIX and as you can see above it does have an anti drain back valve, but on the 850 it wouldn't matter if it didn't due the filters position the oil cannot drain out of the filter anyway.

As for the price difference my money says it is simply due to the applications/demand that use each filter. The 1356 and 1357's have more automotive application than the 1358 does. The 1358 is used mostly in Powersports and Equipment applications.

You can get the WIX 51358 from Rock Auto for 7.69 ea.

That is a good price for the filter.

If the 550 uses the same oil filter as the 500 then there are many aftermarket filter for it,like all atvs with the automotive spin on type oil filters.

Polaris calls there new oil 2w-50 ,a ploy I think so no one dares buy a aftermarket oil and has to go to the dealership. I,m sure amsoil.,mobile1 and royal purple 0w-40 would work fine.
