300 xplorer starting problems
#1
I have a 1998 300 xplorer. the pull start works fine. but the electric start does nothing. If i have the battery charged it drains down over time. i can jump the starter selenoid and it starts. so i know the starter is good. if the starter selenoid was bad it wouldnt account for the battery draining. when i run it on the pull start the battery should recharge. I have no wiring scematics for this but seems like maybe a bad voltage reg if they have one of these? would that account for it not starting too? any info on these machines would be helpfull or wiring scematic would be awesome.

If your battery is charged up and you can jump the solenoid and it will start, but will not start otherwise . You probally have a bad solenoid or switch. Try applying battery voltage to the small wire @ the solenoid if it cranks you have a problem in the switch circuit. As far as your battery, they will drain down if not ridden often, however, check the voltage with a volt meter @ the battery to check your charging system. Should be approx 14 volts. If needed I may be able to help w/schematic.

Do you have any other accessories on the battery like a winch? Also, I'd shut the machine off and use a multimeter and see if the voltage drops slowly. If you have additional accy. hooked up, remove one at a time.
Start the machine, rev it a tad and your charging voltage should be around 13-14VDC.
Use a pair of lineman pliers and jump the two posts on your solenoid. If she fires, I'd replace your solenoid. I just bought one of ebay for 19 buxs.
I believe you can put your multimeter on ohms and check the red/white white on the solenoid. I believe it should be around 3.8ohms. I have a 2000 manual and can check it for you tomorrow but not sure if the 03 is the same.

if i had to guess, your solenoide is bad(or nopower getting to it as stated above) and your recifier(regulator) is either unplugged, bad connections, or is not working. it should be up under the front of the bike under the plastic towards maybe the handle bars. if you do a voltage test w/the bike running w/ a meter it should be pushing 13.5 or better w/ it reved up a little. if not, then check what i mentioned.
