Default 96 xpress 400 carb issues

my original carb was all messed up, no choke plunger, it ran ok with it, but i had no air box ither. so i bought another carb off ebay, had the plunger and cable, also bought an airbox, it will not hardly run , start , really anything, occasional it will start and run but it bogs badly and backfires, the original carb has a diffrent needle jet then the other carb. the one i bought looks to be in awesome shape, the needle jet is longer in it, and the adjustment screw on the outside is 1 turn out. i appriciate any help , im not that good at jetting carbs,
by the way i live in charleston wv i know altitude has a diffrence
thanks brandon

ok it will run on half choke, the air box is on now with no filter, still not idle'n and still bogs some, but i can ride it down the road.
I also moved the needle jet up to the top notch, it will bottom out in the jet if i remove the little plastic o ring under the e clip, but i didnt remove it, its also the longer needle jet that came in the better carb.
i mixed the fuel 32:1 because the oil pump is broken right now, 89 octane
also if i let the revs drop down to almost idle and give it some throttle it will bog out and die
What should i do next ?
thanks brandon

so thid carb was not on a 400? if not then chances are it's a differnt size (example: a 38 mm when you had a 34mm these are just numbers i threw out there) in which nothing is going to work unless you change every thing in the carb like the needle jet, the main and pilot jet to make it run correctly. also these are made to run w/ the restriction on the air box and filter in them, which would make it run rich in the first place. hope that helps.

yea the carb was from a sportsman 400 , exact same carb 34mm , mikuni
the jets may be diffrent , i couldnt really read the numbers, but the better carb, the one im using now has the longer needle jet in it, the previous carb may have been from a 250 or something ?
im really unsure maybe i can take the carb back down tom and snap some pics
thanks brandon

if its the same carb you should be able to use your parts(if there good) into the new carb you put on and have it be rigt as long as your needle will be set at the same height. here are the numbers for the jets for the 96' xpresss
pilot-#30, main-#210, needle jet-#480, JET NEEDLE,6-DH29 (6DH29-3), this is off the carb breakdown. hope it helps.
