If there were some way to remove the passenger seat on the Touring and use that space for cargo then it would have the identical capacity as the X2

That surprises me. Live and learn I guess. I thought they would rate the rear for the rear rack/seat depending on how you were using. In other words both quads would be rated to carry 400 lbs. regardless if it was with a passenger or not. I stand corrected.

After looking at that Picture. Is there a chance someone has installed them with the wrong end up?? I don't even no if they can be put in upside down but it might be worth looking at.

NoJoke, mine are the same as your, just the angle of the photo and the spring made it look different.

Big-O, the bottom opening of the spring is larger than the top so that it sits on the adjustment ring at the bottom of the strut. You can't put them on upside down.

I think the play between the retaining clip and the ring at the top of the strut allow the spring to move out of alignment. I'm just not sure why the spring didn't go back into position, as it was obviously out of position long enough for the rubbing to mark the spring and strut.

LV Quad - what you say makes sense, as all the parts seem to be interchangeable.

Does anyone know if the HD springs referenced for the single seater upgrades are the same as the stock in the touring and x2?

It's still ski season, so it may be a week or so before I get out again on a good trail, but I'll let you know what happens. I'm also going to mess with my buddy's x2 (if he lets me) to see if the same thing can happen to his. I really appreciate the help guys.

On a related note I did get another buddy hooked - he just bought a Sportsman 500 single seater, hence the ride the other night - we had to get his maiden ride behind him. He's spent the weekend doing upgrades - we're so proud (sniff).
