Default Questions for 09 sportsman 500ho

Can anyone tell me what rpm the rev limiter is set at? Also what speeds are people seeing with these bikes, mine will only go 53 mph and it hits a wall, accelerates very good to this speed and then just stops. I need to get more speed out of it, has anyone found ways to get more speed out of them, also how are people modifying the airbox? Thanks.

Around 5200-5500 the limiter kicks in. Better to hit the limiter than damage the engine,BUT 53 is slightly lower than normal(around 60 with a big guy like me on most of 500 H.O's) Could be belt wear, slipping, etc OR just the tendency of the machine. I've had this before where two identical machines ran differently on top end straight out of the crate! As far as speed mods, the "mod" guys can give you some tips. OPT

My 06 gets up to 53mph with some 26" bighorns. Not sure what the real speed is, but its probably around 58-60mph since bigorns run big.

5200-5500? I thought peak power is at 6600? My machine runs around 6500-6600 at wot then goes up to 7000 rpms when topped out. My dads 04 500 ho runs about the same as mine. The engine doesn't sound like its right or I am not used to it, maybe the valves are out of adj. but it sounds like its spark knocking when you go wot. It only has 450 miles on it and has always sounded like this. I do have a new belt sitting here but I am waiting to put it in till I decide what clutch kit to go with. Thanks for the response.

I've seen mine hit 6900, with my 25" bighorns, top speed on a flat desert with a tail wind was 57 on the GPS and 54 in the other direction, so I'd say 55 is a good number. Elevation was around 5,000 ft, which probably impacts the speed.

My 09 revs over the 6300 mark, Never hit the limiter. I'm not a speed demon, but then again I bought a 500 so thats obvious.
I read that 57 is the average factory top speed, so it might be your belt.
How many miles on it. Sometimes it takes a few hundred before the machine wakes up.
I never used to be able to get the front end up in low. Not even close. No she comes up off the line without much effort(on my part).

Is there any harm in hitting the rev limiter?
