Default polaris 400 won't start

hi - i am new to this forum and was hoping for some suggestions... i have a polaris 400 sportsman and it will not start. you turn the key and nothing is just won't fire. Checked the spark plug and there no spark coming to the plug.. checked the coil and their is no spark there either. we had to hook the battery up to charger because of sitting for months (have done this in the past no problems) but for some reason we heard a pop and the fan clicked on and the dash lights went out - cannot seem to locate the problem.. am new to working on atvs..

i take it this is a 2 stroke?? what year??
you could try following the wires ,from the left handlbar ,to under the hood ,and disconnect the lil black wire. this negates the kill switch.
You may want to clean the connections on the battery and also check and clean your grounds, that may have popped your bulbs, check the rest while you're at it.

If its a 400HO (08 & newer) check the resetable circuit breakers.

it is a 2005 4 stroke. thanks for the info - we did clean the battery connections prior to installing the new battery - i will try the cleaning the grounds - would this cause no spark to the coil...

Just to make it clear does the starter spin the engine over when you push the button?

yes it spins the engine just doesn't get enough juice or something to actually start.
