atv winches

I had a connector problem on one of our two Warn 2500 lb. winches. Other than that they sure have come in handy. I think one of the things that helps is using a ****** block pulley to help the winch to work a little easier. I also rev. the engines a bit so they are getting plenty of juice when winching. So far, other than the one problem they have been excellent.

I pulled down a 7 foot tall railroad tie retaining wall with my Warn 2500, strapped the rear hitch on the Polaris to a tree, blocked the tires and broke the cable but the Warn still works fine after 3 years. Only used the Polaris winch on the 850XP 1 time to move a tree off the trail with no problem.

I had a 2000lb Warn on my 300TRX and it did plenty for the quad. I did however eventually burn out the solenoid. It was a basic winch without a contactor. Never did fix it yet it's still on there.
Have done a lot of competitive winching over here in 4x4 (not atv) competitions. It's all about speed. A friend of mine has just designed a high mount based around the principles of a Warn 8274-50. It is a brand new winch. Do you think I would need heavy duty springs on the quad with this on the front???
All the best

You have to look at what a winch is,just an electric motor with a spool and a couple of gears. from the winches i've seen, none of them are sealed from the elements and they all need a lil' maintenence from time to time. I go thru so much mud and water that i take mine apart in the spring every year to clean the crap out of it ,just to keep it working in both directions.
