Clutch Kit Suggestions

Default Clutch Kit Suggestions

I have an 08 SP 500 H.O. I have kept everything stock to this point. I want to upgrade tires to 27" Swamplites. Should I put a clutch kit on my bike? Any suggestions on a manufacturer? I have been looking at the Dalton Outlaw kit.

The 2 that always come are Dalton and EPI. Do a google search on both and you can get some info on the differences. I think EPI also makes the clutch kits for highlifter....

Default no clutch kit

i had a 02 sportsman 400 with 27 inch swamplites and it turned them just fine. If you put a clutch kit on a wheeler they tend to give you more low end, but reduce your speed by approximately half. I now have an 05 and 06 800. the 05 has the 27 inch swamplites and the 06 has 28 inch dirtdevils. I think you will be just fine with the 27's. you don't need a clutch kit in my opinion

I have always had good luck with EPI. You'll get way better lower end and typically lose about 4-5 mph off the top. Belts seem to last longer and even though you can get away with turning the tires stock it's a lot easier on the machine clutched IMO.

AMEN!!

A good clutch kit should help you out, especially anytime you go with larger tires. EPI offers a Sport Utility clutch kit specifically designed for 27-28" tires. The part number for your machine would be WE435013. You can also get the same kit with a severe duty belt part number WE435027.

depends on how you ride if you need one or not. it wouldn't hurt if your looking to get a little more take off back form the big tires.

Wow. Thanks guys. I really appreciate the info and part numbers. I am going to do some research. I hit a lot of trails, but East Texas can get really wet and gnarly mud holes, most of which have been rutted out. I don't necessarily want to mess with a lift but I really like the 27" swamplites.....a buddy of mine has them on a Brute and has had really good luck with them in the mud. I am not too terribly concerned with speed on the top end. The fastest I usually get out here is 30 to 35 mph and if I had to deal with slower speeds to turn the bigger tires I think I can live with it....especially if it is easier on my bike. I really appreciate it. I love this forum. I have not found a better source of solid info on Polaris bikes and equipment anywhere else. I can tell everyone on here shares the same love of riding.

I would save yourself the cash and just go to the dealer and get some different weights.

I was kind of in the same boat as you until I upgraded by clutch.

I bought a heel clicker kit, but after being inside there and see what all was going on, tossing the heelclicker spring because it was not calibrated well I think differently. Also found out that you can buy different weights from the Po dealer (much cheaper) and tune it that way.

I had heard that the newer machines already had improvded clutches.....guess not enough yet.

The main thing I think to tuning these is to get your belt to grab better. All you have to do is get some lighter weights and she will bite and go.

if you son't care about speed or what not, just use low range when you in to paly in the bad stuff and you won't need a kit imo.

jethrob,

Are you saying that these are OEM weights that could be replaced from stock to improve clutching? I never heard of Polaris offering this before? Is this something new or have they always done this?

If I were to keep my SP800 I would like to have it tuned better for hilling. I don't like the front lift effect and jumpy throttle. Some who I have talked with on this forum told me that all the clutching in the world would NOT help me on that. I am still curious! If its something that wouldn't cost me an arm and leg and I like the improvements I would keep what I have. But the list goes on with improvements too, lol (Suspension, Big horn tires)
