Default belt issue

I have a 97 sp500.I had the belt cover off chasing a water leak and noticed that the belt had ground down 2 raised ridges formed into the cover off flush.I asked the guy who I bought it from and he said that he kept breaking or burning the 500 belts up and the dealer put a 750 belt on there due to it being wider for some reason.I now no why the belt is slapping the cover.I would think the clutch and pulley would be farther apart on a bigger bike due to its a differnt motor so the belt for a 750 would be to long.Is this a bunch of bs or is there something else to it.school me on the ways of the polaris

I think the belts are specially made and no matter what the cc`s are they should stand up if properly used. If your quad is eating belt at an abnormal rate I`d be looking at the clutch alignment if that is good try to remember when in use under load at slow speeds use low range. Sure the quad will rev alittle higher and the secondary will turn with the primary but it will use the belt evenly rather than the motor working to try and turn the tranny and the end result waist another belt.

My co-worker has the same Sportmen (Green color)with the same trouble.........
He was told the cover has some warpage and the buttons and clutch need service............This model/year has very little clearance between the clutch and cover even when new/working correct.....Caper.........

A 700 belt is a good upgrade along with a newer belt cover.the old style ran close to the belt and warped easy. The 700 belt will run cooler.
