Default Sportsman 800 VS Sportsman 850XP on fuel

Is the 850XP as fuel hungry as the Sportsman 800 is?
I haven't really gotten to ride my 850 much yet but from everything i've been told the 800 is a thirsty one and was wondering if Polaris got the 850 to run a better mpg?

I have an 800 and a friend of mine as the 850. We hit the trails together all the time, and he seems to get about 20 - 30 more miles than I do.

Yep, I would get a noticeable difference between my friend's 800 and my 850. He was always worried and wanting to head back. Can't remember the exact difference, but it was certainly there.

There are a number of posts about this topic if you search it.

Wow, didn't realize you could get 18 running WOT. That is exceptional.

How do friends keep up with an XP850 running wide open? The things are smokin' fast machines. I don't think a lot of people really get into the top end of these that often. The power they make above 6K is scary.

X2 on above. Really now, if you are worried about "MPG's", maybe you should consider inventing and or creating a ATV that could produce those types of mpg numbers. As always, if Fuel is a concern of yours, my recommendation to you is to look for another sport that offers fuel savings to you. Snowmobiles, ATV's, and Dirtbikes, just don't have that built into their MO by the manufacturers at this time.

I'm not looking for Prius MPG or even 4 banger car MPG but i was hoping to top 10mpg on nice trails sounds like it's do able.

I just sold a IQ Shift 550 sled that drank fuel so bad it wasn't even fun taking it out because I would spend 70 bucks in a day of fuel and oil. That adds up if you ride 3 or 4 times a week.

Totally agree with the statement above. When I go riding with the guys...they are all amazed that the XP 850 does so well on MPG. Tons of power...and extended riding too!
