Towing capability's on a 850xp
#1
I have a polaris 2010 850xp.with tracks on it.
I do alot of ice fishing and i want to tow a shack.
was wondering if i am going to damage anything towing it.
The weight of it is 2200lbs it tows it with no problem. There is litterly no tongue weight on the quad.It seems to have lots of power while towing.I only tow in low gear and try to keep it below 5200 rpm
Just concerned i am going to blow something on it.

welcome to the forum. as mentioned the tongue weight would be the most of the issue and it sounds like there isn't much. you are doing right by using low range and not reving the hell out of the engine and it will break traction before it does any damage.

I agree, if the ATV is in low range it will break traction before it breaks something mechanical.
I roped my ATV to a big tree and dug 4 tires ruts to see if the ATV really had AWD and nothing broke. LOL

They are designed to eat tyres before breaking anything else.
Tracks will decrease top speed, but will increase pulling capacity, but being built like a Polaris it will surely break traction and try to smoke the rubber tracks before even breaking into a sweat.
When usings Low and high gear as per operating manual, as you are doing at the moment there shouldn't be any problem what so ever.
As the primary clutch will only let the belt go out so far you should be able to gun the throttle all the way and run maximum rpm.
Running at your stated rpm, will certainly not hurt anything.
Sometimes we are amazed what these little 4WD critters will do

I agree with everyone else you'll lose traction way before breaking anything. I've had to pull my pickup down a road once because the fool thing wouldn't start. That was about 6800lb i think granted once it's rolling it's easy but that being said it never once bothered the ATV. I've pulled things over 4000lb many times with the ATV and it was still on the original belt when i traded it in.
Also note the heavy things I pulled where all machines with their own brakes.
Thats the kicker. The ATV can get some crazy heavy stuff rolling getting it stopped on the other hand is a different story.
I have a couple stories from when I was younger but pulling too much rolling weight and trouble stopping but the safety police i think would get mad. ha-ha

Do you have or have owned a tracked atv? Please clarify what you mean and where do you think the wear will occur.
I've had the same set of tracks on 3 atvs putting 1700-2000 mi per year each winter and haven't incurred one (yes zero) repair on tracks or machines.
