Usually this is lean condition when it backfires, the hotter it gets the leaner it runs and backfires even worse. Upping the main jet and possibly pilot jet and a little up on the slide needle will help, OR just a simple carb clean/rebuild if its a stock engine could help.(also check for intake boot leaks, cracks,or any thing that cause air leaks) Plus make sure fuel is fresh and air filter clean PLUS knowing what machine you have can help narrow down problems! running lean by the sounds. may want to check to make sure carb isn't dirty(most likely main jet side). if theres a fuel filter may rplace or at least check for fuel flow. imo

If it's only when you let off it is most likely NOT the main jet. If it back fired when you were deep in the throttle then that would be the main. When you let off the slow jet will take over.

Are there any mods? You can adjust the air/fuel mixture to adjust a bit. Turn a half turn at a time to see if it changes anything. If not you'll need to tear into the carb and clean it up. Something is prohibiting flow.
