Default 99 Xplorer 400 oil/water seals for water pump

I'm in the middle of a rebuild for my 99 xplorer 400. I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it required to use the special tool to install the two seals on the water pump shaft? The motor is off the frame.

2. I bought a set of seals for the waterpump. There doesn't seem to be a difference between the two seals. Is there a way to tell between the water seal and the oil seal?

Thanks

Yes the two seals are different.(difference is the with of lip on one seal, one is thicker) you can use a small socket to seat them, but make sure the two small holes in the cavity are not covered for seals and bearing(check your manual) Just pry one seal out and match it up with the new one Replace both seals in the same position as removed! Thanks. Will the other oil seal work in place of the water seal? I ordered an OEM water seal yesterday.

Should work??,BUT I always installed them according to the way they came out! They are different for a reason! May be one seals coolant better because of the wider lip than the other?? OPT
