1995 Polaris Sportsman 400 Stalls in Reverse

I have a 1995 Polaris sportsman 500 that stalls every time you put it in reverse. If I push the "Override Switch(Reverse Speed Limiter)" It will not stall and it backs up fine. Does anyone have any Idea what the problem is? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you can not figger it out I think there is a way to bypass the reverse safety limiter, you would have to do a search on this site to find it though.

I may also do it I hate holding down the yellow button sometimes.

unhook black wire from speed limiter box

When you say "it stalls"...are you saying it dies? Or just sputters? It's supposed to "sputter" in reverse until you push the reverse override.

Stalls in Reverse

The engine quits.

Terminal board on left side under fuel tank cover (may have to lift up/remove tank cover to get to top of terminal board. There are two black wires at top of board, one goes to engine kill switch(you will know you have the wrong wire if key switch doesn't shut engine off) Just pull the black wire from the small limiter module and will solve the problem.Yellow button is defeated and machine will have FULL power in reverse at all times. Is there a similarly simple way to disconnect the override button on my 400 trailblazer?

Edit

Sorry I'm not trying to hijack, just wondering since that seems REALLY easy to do besides disassembling the top of the bike :)

On your 2003 Trail Blazer 400 just pop the front cover off. You will see two modules, the one on the left is the limiter, the one on the right is the reg/rectifier. Just pull the black lead from the left module, easier than than on the Sportsman 400. OPT

Your knowledge is priceless OPT! Thanks again! it almost feels like it goes better now than it did with pushing the override :) Do I need to cap the wire I pulled off(male round connector)?

Sorry brother polaris isn't my game... It definetly sounds electrical thoe. Does it run/pull/idle fine in 1/neutral?

You can just wrap a little tape around the connector just in case it was to touch a hot wire.
By disconnecting the limiter module all it does is allows full power in reverse without having
to push the over ride button. They can short out and limit forward or die when you put it in
reverse. Thats the main purpose of the reverse limiter module,my opinion they should have never had one!

I know this is an old thread but I'm working on someone's 1999 Xplorer 400 with the same symptoms and can't seem to find that box. The part that might make this tricky is that someone swapped in a 4 stroke motor and it's got some modifications, I've noticed a few brown ground wires cut for one thing. and I don't know for sure but I think it is a 2001-2002 sportsman 400 motor.

If they swapped all the electronics for the Sportsman 400 engine over, then you wouldn't have the limiter module. The speedometer would have the limiter passing through it. Since you've got it in a 99 Explorer frame I don't know what they might have done on this half breed as far as what they did on the speedo harness. The brown wires are ground wires that they may not have needed.

Help

I have a similar issue. My Xplorer 400 when shifted into reverse sputters and backfires. Is this the same issue?

I'm not sure on the year exactly. I was told 03.

old polaris tech 03-25-2018 03:56 PM

IF you have the 400 2 stroke look on the right frame down tube. Should be a plate or etched serial number. Plus if you still have the engine sticker intact on the recoil housing, the first two digits is the year model.

2001

That's better. Pull the black wire from the reverse limiter(#30) at the terminal board and see if that helps. You wont have to push the over ride button to get full power in reverse either. The limiter module may be stuck down behind the oil tank.Just find the black wire from it. IF you haven't been pushing the over ride button in reverse it will spit and sputter above about 4 mph. It's designed that way. Just checking to make sure..

A lot of people aren't told about the reverse override button when they buy used. If you don't have an owner's manual it can take a long time to figure it out.
