Default Shifting Question

Can I shift gears (low to high, high back to low) on the fly ? I thought I saw a thread that was talking about shifting, but now I can't find it. Something about hitting a brake while shifting ?? If so how does it work ??

Since I can't have a sig yet, I have an 08 800 EFI Sportsman Touring bike.

Howdy tekrsq..........if I could quote the late, great Amy Winehouse,"No...no...no". You should be at a compelte stop and the engine at an idle to shift.......NoJoke

No joke is right must be at a stop. You may have read a post about shifting gears on ice. If you have the back tires locked up long enough to let the engine idle down you can shift gears. This is because all of the drivechain has stopped moving.

I know this is possible because I have done it out on frozen lakes, I heard about and wanted to see if it works. I haven't ever made a habit out of it or ever tried it on dirt. I am sure it would work on dirt but would be a little trickier.

Thanks guys. I didn't think so (I had never heard of it before), but wanted to make sure before I tried it.

With the right amount of throttle and no load on the drive train at speeds under 10 mph I don't see why you shouldn't be able to shift from low range to high range but I doubt that you could ever shift from high to low while moving.

I realize mine's not a Polaris and that they are different but I'v been shifting mine from low to high while going and if the timing is right from high to low without stopping since it was new.

Just like shifting a manual trans without using the clutch.

Lol...it sounded bad to me too, but it semed like several people were doing it, and seemed like it was "normal". I REALLY wish I could find the thread, but I'm really not sure it was even on this board...oh well.

Anyway, they were saying something about around 7-10 mph you could shift into high if you tapped one of the brakes as you shifted. Something about the brake disengaged something in the trans that allowed the shift without tearing anything out. I had never heard of this and asked a couple of the local Polaris dealers, and they also told me they had not heard of it. BUT before I tried it, I wanted to ask the experts, lol.

I admit I was a little excited about it because it is such a PITA to have to stop in the middle of the trail and switch gears all the time.

But its a bigger PITA to tear into transmission! Would be nice if the trans was a syncromesh like cars, but on straight cut gears and slightly beveled gear dogs its a little hard on em slamming em in gear! OPT
