04 700 (not 1/2) has a few issues
#1
First time posting, so forgive me. I'm trying to change the plugs, I got the right side done but I cant even get the socket on the left side. I've scraped, blown air and brake cleanered it but it wont seat on the flats of the plug. Im considering a pressure washer. Do you need a specialty tool for that side? Any advice is appreciated. Second how much play is allowable in the u-joints of the bike? Machine has 2000 mi.

Welcome to the forum! You might try to remove the left plug from the right side! Worked best for my big hands!.Easier if you remove the breather hose out of the way and just reach across engine and with a socket and 1/2" extension you can easily remove the plug.Too hard from the left side with the clutch air exhaust tube in the way! Just replace with NGK BKR7ES plugs, not the Champions! A little play in the u-joints is normal.PLUS if you have the early build on the 700 with the DUCATI coil pack (under front cover, combination cdi and coil) you might check into info on this system on electrical problems and updated system.

OPT, thanks for the response, Im actully having trouble getting the socket ON the damn thing! it stops about .125 away from the flats on the plug. Im thinking mud or something just got in there but I even took the pressure washer to it and it still wont seat. Im thinking I may need a thinner walled socket or a specialty tool. And ill check that coil tonight. Thanks again.

I had to use my wife's compact case mirror and flashlight to look into that side to see the mud and debris that was packed in there. I then used a really small screwdriverto scrap around the plug to allow enough room for the socket. It sucks but it sounds like the same issues I had with my 2003 600. I did all my work from the opposite side.

Update: Got the plug out, Big600twin I did you one better then my wifes compact. I used the wife and her tiny hands! It was PACKED full of mud, so much for those oversized plug caps! Its still hesitating and at sustained throttle it jumps 50 rpm up and down. Im thinking its a half plugged jet in the carb. OPT I tried to check the cdi but im not sure wth im looking at. Thanks to all who responded. Love this forum!

TOMKAT- wondering if you are the regular I see on lakestate?? Good to see another Minnesotan. As for the CDI and ignition stuff, you need to see if you have the Ducati system or the updated Kokusan ignition. If it is original, it will be based on build date. My atv will not start due to lack of spark and will be ordering the new kit, $450 (ouch) to get mine back on the trail. Maybe for you the carb needs a little work. Good luck.
