I am rebuilding a 1987 trail boss 250 and i need to know the measurment to set the float height and also where it is measured from. Also this machine ran decent before the rebuild with the exception that the choke had to stay in the half way postion for it to idle or it would shut off any ideas with that? i cleaned the carb with no change.

Welcome to the forum! You can go by the manual on the carb float height (which I can't remember!) OR just have the float bottom level with the carb body when upside down!Just adjust the float tang if necessary.Have you replaced the needle and seat also? If still has to have the choke on to run, recheck the pilot and main jet for any blockage. Plus about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out on air/fuel screw. If the jets are clear, possible that you could have a crank seal leaking a little and the usual one is the seal behind the drive clutch? Plus have you checked compression? Needs to have a minimum of 100 psi. Hope this is enough to get you started. OPT

I'd rebuild the carb first, make sure the air filter is clean. Since the carb was overflowing this could be the major problem. Wouldn't hurt to check compression though. Also as old as it is I would go ahead and replace the seals if never have been changed (could be distorted from excess gas in the crank from the carb and leaking air?) If you have a clutch puller and a flywheel puller(steering wheel puller works good) To check for any seal or air leakage you have to block off the exhaust, have an adapter and low pressure gauge for the intake and pump up no more than 10 psi and should hold and not leak down! Seals are cheap and if it runs ok after the carb job, just keep em handy(eventually you will need em!)
