Good news is it turns over and runs. Hopefully all the troubles will be on the outside of the motor.

Drain the tank, and carb, pull the carb, tear it down laying each screw, and part out in order you removed them, clean the carb body, and jets thoroughly paying very close attention to the pilot jets tiny little orifices, and the exact number of turns you make removing the air/fuel mixture screw...Remove,flush out the tank, and petcock assembly, install all new fuel line(just in case it has varnish buildup inside of it,or the rubbers breaking down causing future headaches)with an inline filter, get it running ,and idling smoothly, then go check out youtube for the proper way as well as tools you need,or don't need as there's a plethora of cheap, easy tool making vids there,as well as information that shows you how to without using the so called specialty tools...Best PoPo clutch related vids I've found were by EPI..

Yea, I watched the epi vids on youtube...good info on the clutch teardown. First to get it running....Looks like the sparkplugs are buried on this one..I want to take a look at them before I dig into the carb.

Well, once you get all the stuff to check the plug, it's not much more to get to the carb.

Yes, and I've run into several irritating problems,.Not unexpected, because my father in law would let almost any jackleg work on the thing when he needed maintenance or repairs because he said the Dealer was too expensive. I knew it had some electical issues because I cant turn the taillights off with the light switch, but it would at least crank and fire, so I was more concerned about finding the supposed clutch problem, figuring I'd troubleshoot the light problem later. Yesterday he mentioned he'd let a neighbors kit ride it once and the kid took it for an accidental swim in a creek,,,I figured that was why the lights were staying on, and why he purchased the new ($77!) ignition switch from the Polaris dealer. Now seems there may be bigger problems with the electrical system. Tonight I cant get it to fire at all... Pulled the plugs and discovered both had busted insulators, dont ask me how..So I thought, all right! that's the problem. Tested fire with the new plugs, and nope....no fire...one tiny spark at the start of the cranking, then nothing. Tonight I'm slowly going through the wiring diagram with my meter and test light, and so far all the wiring and connectors look fine, no cut or frayed wires or corrosion. I bought another more detailed service manual today so at least i'm not working blind, but If anyone has the same quad,,2006 Non EFI Sportsman 700 and has had a no fire situation any help would be appreciated ...I may have to admit defeat and bring it to the Polaris dealer. I can usually get one going, but this thing is way more complicated then my older Honda quads!

Taillight will stay on with the headlight off. Safety feature.

I can see two good things coming from all this. First, even with 1500 dollars sunk into it, you come out ahead. Second, you're gonna know this thing inside and out when you're done.

Yes, i'll be an expert, or locked up somewhere!...Good to know about the safety feature of the taillights, but these come on the minute the battery is connected, even with the key switched off....very strange.
