Default Sportsman stock muffler mod??

I was riding behind a guy on a sp700 last weekend and noticed his muffler sounded louder and deeper (not obnoxious, just good). The exit pipe came out of the rear instead of the bottom. I talked to him briefly. He said it was the stock muff. And that he cut the front and back off. Patched the stock exit hole. Drilled a new one in the rear and welded it back together. I Couldn't even tell that it was a mod. It looked great. Could there be any negative effects? So has anybody tried this? I don't see why you have to cut the front off. And how far do you drill the exit hole. Thru baffles or not? Thanks for any response. I hope to do this, never cared for the stock sound

Would it still have a functioning spark arrestor?

I would think so. But I do not know the anatomy of this muffler?

As long as it's at the bottom and angled down for drainage(otherwise if you go deep the water will not all get out and sit in the bottom of the muffler until it dries up) and the spark arrestor is still there it shouldn't be an issue. You could easily fab it up so an aftermarket spark arrestor screen can be installed.
