2003 500 HO Question
Guys, I am in the midst of going over my Sportsman 500 Ho as I am getting it ready for a trip to Hatfield/Mccoy this summer. It only has 1300 miles on it but being nearly 10 years old there are some issues that I like to stay on top of. My question is this, I am replacing the magnetic coils for the front hubs and I am wondering if I need to purchase the $39.00 tool to place the "cover" on over the coils? If not I would simply opt to use a piece of wood and gently tap the cover on.
Any help would be appreciated, John

I never used the "tool" just used a small piece of 1/4 or 2x4 block to gently tap the coil sleeve on. Make sure you use rtv sealant all over the area the sleeve fits on and just let the excess squish out like the original one. Use a straight edge and measure all round as you tap it on to keep it straight and using a feeler gauge don't go further than flushing up the sleeve and inner pole where the coil fits on, but better to have about .001 clearance under the straight edge.Works better and quicker if you heat the sleeve up a little, use gloves to stick the sleeve on, then start tapping in. Less tapping needed and less danger of damaging the sleeve. OPT
