Default Oil Change

I have a 1998 Polaris Mgnum 425 4 X 4 that I keep at my place in the Texas Hill Country. I need to do some general maintenance on it including changing the oil and oil filter. I have to take all supplies with me as my place is very remote. Can anyone tell me what kind of oil and oil filter I should purchase as well as what tools I will need to take care of this?

Welcome to the forums.

As far as oil goes, there's always going to be a debate as to what is best. Stick with the recommended weight and you can buy a variety of different brands, cheaper, at you local auto parts store. Pretty sure the filter will convert to an auto parts number too, although I don't have the number that would fit yours. Ebay is a good place to buy a few at at time and save some money.

Not familiar with that year and model, but the ones I've had it was pretty straightforward on the procedure. Drain plug and filter were easy to get to, as was the filler but a funnel will be very helpful with that.

Socket set, filter wrench and something to drain the old oil into is about all you'll need.

if your doing the front / rear diff and tranny. You will need some allen keys, a funnel with a hose, as the fills are a little bit of a stretch. That is if they are the same as the newer models.

The 425 magnum has two different drain plugs too. You have to pull that one at the bottom of the engine to get out the rest of the oil at the bottom of the crankcase.

Easier way to drain the oil and not have to mess with the sump plug is to drain the oil tank, leave the old filter on, crank the engine for no more than 15 seconds and kill it. The 8 ounces from the sump will drain into and out of the tank, then you can remove the filter. Replace with a new filter and add 2 new quarts of oil. OPT
