I looked at clutches on e bay they seem to all have a smooth shaft where belt rides mine has a grooved collar around shaft kinda like something u see on cars that have v belts..would a smooth one work???

Almost all 250,300,400 2 stroke clutches will work. Just keep an eye out on a cheap one.http://www.ebay.com/itm/94-95-Polaris-400-400L-4X4-Sportsman-Xplorer-Primary-Drive-Clutch-Magnum-96-97-/321284391388?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ace0ac1dc&vxp=mtr

How much oil in crankcase in a 400 two stroke?? And is it 10-30???

user493 01-29-2014 10:24 PM

There isn't any crankcase oil in any 2 strokes I've seen. They get their lube from the oil injector or pre-mixed gas.

I got motor back together today..sounds good but gas is coming out of both vent hoses while its just idling????? Is it possible that I need to bend float arm a little ????I took whole carb apart and blew all jets out...?????

old polaris tech 02-01-2014 01:57 AM

Sounds like you need a carb kit if you just took the carb apart and cleaned it. Float arm should be parallel with carb body when held sideways, float arm just touching the needle. If this doesn't stop the gas overflowing could be a worn float arm and pin sticking. #28 and 29. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Is it possible for the counter balance oil to leak out of starter??? The starter has a bad gasket in middle of it..400 explorer..

mike beck 02-03-2014 09:25 AM

Also gas keeps leaking out overnight with fuel valve shut off???

Check the gas lines for leaking or order a new fuel valve if it's the problem. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Plus install the new carb kit I referenced to. Both could be the source of your gas problems.

How about counter balance question???

old polaris tech 02-03-2014 04:05 PM

Anythings possible if the seal behind the stator is leaking. Just pull the recoil cover and you'll see if it is. Any gas,oil from c/b can get down into the starter.Plus check your counter balancer fluid on the dip stick under the carb to see if it's contaminated with coolant. If it is w/p seals and bearing need to be replaced.
