I have an 02 Sportsman 700 that still has the original Ducati ignition. Lately I've noticed at steady lower rpm's the engine sputters and misses, but will respond with full power if the throttle is pegged. When I let off of the throttle, there are several loud backfires like someone turned the key off then back on. Could this be the Ducati ignition failing? Does the ignition typically completely fail or can it be a problem like I described above? Any info on how I can check? Thanks!

 

Welcome to the forum! YES to all the above questions! It can sputter,pop, back fire,run good at speed,but crappy at idle. It will eventually fail. Some I've changed out the owners just killed em and they never started back up. Best to get the Kokusan update ignition kit before it leaves you stranded. Kit #2202602. Check Cycle Parts Warehouse or Cheap Cycle Parts as to who is cheaper,plus there may be some other places online. Around $450-$500 for the kit. OPT

 

That's kinda what I figured, but I wanted to get an educated opinion. Are there any special tools or anything I need to know about installing the new ignition? Do you recommend checking or replacing anything else while I've got it apart?

The kit comes with a new stator,flywheel,cdi,coil,regulator/rectifier,jumper wires,and instructions. The hardest part is pulling the flywheel off. Make sure you have a good puller (steering wheel puller is ok) three 8 mm long bolts and apply heat on the crank shaft area while the flywheel is under pressure. Just don't damage the crank shaft threads.Best to use an electric or air impact. Another problem was the intake manifold cracking under the carb clamp and leaking air. This also could be part of your problem,but still replace the updated kit even if you have to replace a split/cracked manifold as the ignition will eventually fail. OPT
