Basically all the engines after 2001 are the same. You'd have to use your ignition,recoil assembly,clutches,carb and exhaust,etc. They aren't cheap for what Polaris calls a "short block" which is a complete engine except the parts mentioned above. Any Fuji single motors of any year should work. You will need your clutch. That includes the 425cc and 455cc as well.
My dad has a 97 500, I have a 2001 the first H.O and my friend has a 2011 500H.O and we look at them and swear Polaris did not do any external changes. Just cams,carbs and flywheels.
The 425 and 455 are the same just bored or stroked different.
Get the whole used motor off of some parted out ATV would me my choice.
