Does anyone have a sequence for troubleshooting the charging or ignition system on a 2003 Trail Blazer 250?

We can pull start it and last time I checked (couple years ago) we COULD use ignition if we put in a new battery. It is just not charging the battery. We run w/o a battery and the light is really dim at idle and normal brightness when riding.

I put a new stator in two years ago because I "thought" that was the issue. It made no difference as I was still getting something like 3.4 volts (or maybe 4.3, can't remember for sure now) at the battery cables, even revving up the motor.

I am just looking to see if anyone has put together a logical sequence for testing. I don't want to keep throwing parts on there until it works.

All of our quads are electric start and this is the only one that doesn't work. I would love to have this fixed for my daughter this season!! I can do anything else on these quads but I struggle with electrical.

First off don't run without a battery,even if it's dead one! You can cause some voltage spikes that can damage electronic components from voltage that has to go somewhere!. Check first if any regulator connections are disconnected. You need to have a fully charged good battery while running to see if the regulator is charging 14-14.5 volts back to the battery. If not, then most of the time is a regulator problem. Hmm, wasn't aware running w/o a battery was an issue!! I happen to have a battery on this Polaris - dead, of course. However, my sons LT80 hasn't had one for years!!

Yeah, I'm about 3-3.5 volts IIRC. Is there a way to determine if the rectifier is bad? Or is this one of the components where you have to eliminate everything else first?

Not really any good check on the reg/rectifier in the manual,just mainly the stator wires leading to it. Yellows to Yellow/Red should read approx 0.3 ohms(give or take 20%) plus no stator wire,Yellow or Yellow/Red should short to ground. Since you replaced the stator,odds are it's the reg/rectifier. The little ones will run with a dead battery(magneto triggered ignition also) and usually not blow bulbs etc. It's mainly that they don't put out 150-200 watts from the stator like the larger atvs do.Some atvs can just dim and not blow bulbs,BUT we really stocked up on bulbs at the shop for the larger atvs and I changed out a lot of blown ones over the years.
