went to go ride around the property last week and my 850 would not start it just clicked at me. i charged the battery and still nothing. i took the starter off and it was very dirty so i cleaned it inside and out. put it all back together and now it turns over but will not start. it fires and acts like its going to start but it dont. i did get it to start one time but it sounded like a cold diesel engine right at start up and as soon as i took my thumb off the throttle it died. any thoughts what could be causing this??

Make sure you don't have too much slack at the thumb throttle.Pop the throttle cap and the etc contacts should have 2mm clearance between them.Just adjust the throttle cable if needed. If thumb throttle is is too loose it can die if the contacts touch. Check also when you turn the key on you can hear the fuel pump prime up.Plus you can remove the cap from the fuel rail shrader valve and press it to see if fuel flows out and is getting to the injectors.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

One other thing is check the small wiring coming from the tps and other sensors. Same thin wiring and connectors as previous models of the 500,700,800 efi machines. All it takes is a small sliver of a bare wire grounding out or an internal wire breakage(soft spot in wiring) to stop one from running.

Don't over look any soft feeling sensor wires that could be broken internally causing intermittent spark.Sometimes it's a tedious process especially if no codes are thrown on the speedo.
