Did you adjust the idle? Gas flow?

There should be a screw beneath the carburetor. Twist in and see if anything happens. If it's too high, twist out. Every twist makes a huge difference.

Is it just hard to push in gear? Or is it clicking? Or what?

It feels like the linkages are out of whack. I have to sorta jam them in. And also when I take it out of low the shifter shows N but it's still in low.

Look at the linkage bars. Make sure they're not bent. There's also an adjustment nut on the linkage bars. (If they're bent, that would explain why it's hard to shift)

I adjusted the nut on mine and fixed the problem where low wasn't fully engaging which made a clicking noise.

Pull the clutch cover and see if you can stop the rear clutch from turning while in neutral with your foot. BE CAREFUL! If you can't the clutch alignment may be off and the rear clutch may need to be shimmed out, especially if the belt touches either side of the front clutch sheaths. If the rear clutch spins it's hard to shift and can stall also. This was a common problem I had on the 2002 and 2003 models especially. Plus worn washers in the front clutch and belt dust can cause problems. You can try to blow out all the dust in an open area and check the belt for any glazed or burnt spots. Item #2 and 18 on the front clutch washers.
