She's got 22 hours on her since the rebuild and I couldn't smell any gas in the oil when I changed it yesterday. And I am runing mobil 0W-40. The spark plug has some nice buildup on the ground strap and tip of the electrode. In the 22 hours or so, it has burned every bit of 3/4 of a quart of oil, maybe more. And as far as the piston, it was wet and glossy with oil, a little bit more on the lower corner of it.

Should have never used that much oil during the 22 hr break in period! With this much oil you should have seen white smoke from the exhaust if it was burning it and not leaking it. But like you said you've got a lot of money in it right now and only thing you can do is to see if the oil consumption stops as you drive it some more, plus contact the place that did the work and see what they will do if it doesn't stop. Not a bad idea to show them the cylinder/piston specs if they don't have the manual and are not a Polaris dealer.Don't know whether it will help or not.

thanks for the help,
i called the shop and he said that he set the clearances to what wiseco recommends.
i took off the carb boot and the intake valves are clean no oil.
the exhaust side has some gritty buildup on the part of the valve stem exposed but agian no oil.
the rings and piston were all from wiseco so if the piston is meant to run under their specs would this cause the issue? i can keep runig it and see if it gets better but if not like you said theres somehow a ring issue.
next few questions, should i take it apart and replace the oil rings, should i do all the rings or is this a situation where i will have to drop even more money on another size up piston and have it bored out and then ignore the wiseco specs and set up to polaris specs?
not looking forward to letting the folks know its got more problems....
thanks again!

Wiseco used to list the clearances on the pistons in the kits, but the last couple years on the ones I used they stopped doing this. They were allowing too much clearances especially on the 2 strokes and took some flack over this. I can just about guess what he allowed, probably around .002 to .003. Don't think tearing it down to replace rings will help if the cylinder is too large to begin with. This is where you need to be more specific as to what tolerance he allowed without giving him what the book says first! Wiseco is a good forged piston versus the Polaris cast piston, but tolerances shouldn't be any different as to what the manual says! I've found that out myself the hard way also.. BUT if you're lucky it could be a broken oil or compression ring, but I'd let this shop check it out if they built the engine! Just show them the oil on top of the piston you mentioned.

again, i just changed the oil after about 22 hours runing the new engine runig mobil 0W-40. it is also hard to tell what color smoke it has because its so cold here in illinois. there is a little oil pool on the pison where it is milled for valve clearance.
what is the max this engine can be bored out to? its at 92.5 right now i thought i read you can bore it up to 4x, is this correct?

On stock Polaris pistons you can only go 50mm over (.020) which is what you have now on the Wiseco. But you can go one last bore, 1 mm over (.040) to make it a 93mm bore with Wiseco. 4677M09300 Product Detail Information - Wiseco Piston Inc.

Just an update, been runin it some more and oil still seems to be consumed at same rate. Now just over 20 hrs since oil change and one quart of oil burned so far.
When the engine was rebuilt and first started there were oil delivery problems and it ran for maybe a minute or so total from the couple times I tried to prime the oil line testing the new oil valve and such. So it is possible that it went dry before it even got broke in, but then was driven very modestly for a long break in. Just wondering if anyone else has any experiences with rebuilt engines like this. Thanks all.

Only if it was bored too large or an oil ring or compression ring broken. Half the oil supply burnt in 20 hrs is way too much.If it's getting oil to the rocker arms, the oil pump is doing it's job. I'd tear it down before something worse happens and check it out.

Thanks opt,
I'm gona tear it down and see what's been goin on for the past 50 hours of run time. For a gasket, I got a moose kit and the head gasket seemed to be pretty good. Any opinions? I can get a whole moose top end kit for the same price as the head and cylinder OEM gaskets.
Lost a little coolant too...couldn't see any apparent leaks.
Thanks again
